Dark spots or skin pigmentation is caused by local hyper pigmentation in skin. It is due to the over production of pigment responsible for skin colour known as melanin. Melanin production may be affected by some hormonal changes such as: pregnancy, menopause and medication or environmental factors like: exposure to sunlight, nutrient deficiency or stress.
Medically there is no harm but socially they make feel conscious. Before treating the dark spots, diagnose the reason of these spots like if they are due to some nutritional imbalances try to treat them by balancing your diet with healthy foods. There are several ways to treat the black spots.
Natural ways to reduce black spots
Diet: Best way to reduce spots is to improve your diet by adding fresh fruits and vegetables. It will make your skin evenly textured, flawless complexion and clear. Pineapple and papaya are very good for this purpose as they contain vitamin E which increases natural glow of the skin. Drink plenty of water 10-12 glass daily to keep your skin well hydrated.
Fresh lemon: fresh lemon or any citrus juice helps in lightening the complexion. Take a slice of fresh lemon and massage it gently on the spots. Leave the juice for thirty minutes and rinse with water.
Aloe vera gel: aloe vera gel is beneficial to treat the black spots due to its bleaching action. Apply gel on your face and massage it for 10-15 minutes and leave over night. You will feel the difference in 3-4 months.
Homemade scrub to reduce black spots: apply a little oil on your face before going to bath. Make a paste of turmeric powder, rice or green gram flower in milk. Apply it on your face for few minutes until it dries up. Scrub with it in circular motion and rinse with water. Do it twice a week, you will feel the difference.
Some other natural remedies:
- Take 25 gram lime flower and put in 250 ml hot water for an hour. Allow to cool after straining and add sodium benzoate. You can also add rose water and keep it in refrigerator for daily use.
- Use of olive oil fades away dark spots in a month
- Few drops of lemon juice in milk can be used to reduce pigmentation
- Lemon juice with honey or cucumber juice can be applied to reduce the dark spots
- Cabbage paste twice a week, coconut or mustard oil before bath will also help to reduce dark spots.
Unnatural ways to reduce dark spots
Acne can be the possible cause of dark spots. Some gentle exfoliation products are available in the markets which removes dead skin cells thus helping to reduce the spots.
Whitening or skin lightening products
There is range of masks and skin lightening cream which contain bleaching agents which lighter the overall skin tone. Care should be taken while using these products.
Creams are used to exfoliate your skin more deeply than traditional exfoliation. Exfoliation allows the skin to rejuvenate itself and reduce dark spots. It can be done at dermatologist’s office or at home.
One or more diluted acids are used to peel off the outer layer of your skin cells. This method even outs skin tone and texture, thus reducing the spots.
It’s more intense treatment than all other and used when there is no other way to reduce dark spots.
